The Financial Aid Officer works closely with all applicants and students seeking financial aid to assist with the costs related to their occupational training. The Financial Aid Officer will provide information on these sources, but it is the responsibility of the applicant or student to make application and provide necessary documentation to establish eligibility with each financial aid source. The Financial Aid Officer works with each agency offering financial aid by providing records of student attendance and by recording progress as mandated by each agency. Pell Grant The Pell Grant Program is a federal aid program designed to provide financial assistance to students attending post-secondary educational institutions. Pell Grants are intended to be the "floor" of a financial aid package and may be combined with other forms of aid in order to meet the full costs of education. The amount of the student's Pell Grant is determined on the basis of her/his financial resources. It is a grant, not a loan. Attendance and satisfactory progress of the student are monitored. Students must meet obligations to maintain the grant award. WIA recipients must apply for a Pell Grant. Pell Grant Applications are available in the Student Affairs Office. Applicants may also apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Workforce Investment Act is a federal aid program that assists students with costs of training. Costs of tuition, registration fees, books, tools, and uniforms may be covered through WIA. Eligible participants may also be reimbursed for transportation costs. Eligibility is determined by the local WIA personnel and is based on financial resources. The Financial Aid Officer works with the WIA offices in certifying students for WIA benefits. A student must make application with local WIA offices. The Financial Aid Officer can provide details. Strategies To Empower People (STEP) Strategies To Empower People is a federal aid program that assists parent participants by providing funds for tuition, books, childcare, and transportation. Participants must have at least one child 18 years of age or younger and must meet financial eligibility requirements. The Financial Aid Officer can provide more details. Social Security Dependent children of disabled or deceased workers covered by Social Security may be eligible to receive benefits while attending school as full-time students. Students should contact the local Social Security Office for determination of eligibility. LEAP - State Grant LEAP awards are offered by the state to technical college students. Recipients must be Pell eligible and must meet grade requirements. The Financial Aid Officer handles applications and awards. The LEAP award is not a loan. Veterans Administration Full-time preparatory programs are approved for Veterans Administration benefits. Interested applicants or students should contact their local VA office and the Campus Financial Aid Officer. Louisiana Rehabilitation Services (LRS) Persons with physical or mental disabilities severe enough to be vocationally handicapped may qualify for financial assistance through Louisiana Rehabilitation Services. The Student Affairs Office refers interested applicants or students to the Louisiana Rehabilitation Services office to apply. Board of Regents Dual Enrollment Initiative Eligible secondary students may receive assistance through the Board of Regents to assist with the cost of tuition, fees, books, and other related costs. Information on the initiative is available through the LTC Student Affairs Office or the high school guidance office. Sullivan Vocational Foundation, Inc. Scholarship The foundation awards two or more scholarships each year to currently enrolled students who demonstrate a strong desire to obtain the skills needed to become employed in a field which instruction is available on the Sullivan Campus. Applications for the scholarships are available through the Financial Aid Office and the Student Affairs Office. TOPS –Tech Awards The Tuition Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) Tech Award was created to promote a skilled workforce in Louisiana by assisting Louisiana high school graduates who choose to pursue skill or occupational training in a Louisiana public postsecondary school which offers a vocational or technical education certificate or diploma program or a non-academic undergraduate degree. The award is for the cost of tuition for up to two years at the Louisiana public postsecondary school attended. Complete eligibility requirements are available in the Student Affairs Office. TOPS – Early Start The tuition opportunity program for secondary students was created to allow secondary students to enroll in technical college courses. The award is for the cost of tuition. Complete eligibility requirements are available in the Student Affairs Office. METLA – Motivational Educational Training of Louisiana Technical College This agency provides funding services to qualified migrant and full-time farm workers and their dependents. Contact information is available in the Student Affairs Office. NOTE: Louisiana Technical College Region 9 does not participate in the Guaranteed Student Loan (Stafford Loan) program. To apply for a deferment on a prior Guaranteed Student Loan (Stafford Loan), the student should obtain a deferment form from his/her lender and bring it to the Financial Aid Officer at your respective campus.
